The year-over-year percentage change in the amount of the Wholesale Price Index (also known as the WPI) is what economists refer to when they talk about inflation. It does so by calculating the percentage change, over the course of one year, in the prices of a standardized set of goods and services. In India, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is used as the benchmark for the calculation of inflation.

An imbalance between the demand for money and the supply of money can lead to inflation. Other factors that can contribute to inflation include shifts in the costs of production and distribution, as well as increases in product taxes. When an economy is experiencing inflation, often known as when the overall level of prices for goods and services goes up, the value of money goes down. This results in a decrease in the number of products and services that may be purchased with a single unit of currency.

The effect on customers is the most negative. Customers have trouble paying for even the most basic things in their lives because the prices of everyday goods are so high. This leaves them with no option other than to want larger earnings for themselves. As a result, the government works hard to limit the effects of inflation.

In spite of the fact that it has a number of unfavorable effects, a healthy economy is characterized by inflation that is at a reasonable level. It is desirable for an economy to have an inflation rate of between 2 and 3 percent because it encourages people to buy more and borrow more money. This is because when there is less inflation, the level of interest rate likewise remains low. Because of this, both the government and the central bank are always working to keep inflation within reasonable limits.
